Engine RemovalDriveshaft removal and prepping for engine pullBefore being able to remove the gearbox, the driveshaft had to be removed. The bolts connecting it to the differential and gearbox were very tight, but after some considerable effort they were all loose and the driveshaft could easily be removed now that the exhaust system was out of the way. In order to remove the gearbox, the clutch slave cylinder has to be removed first. It is fastened to the bellhousing with two nuts, one of which is easily accessible. The other nut however, required some more effort in order to be accessed. First, I dropped the gearbox/engine assembly by removing the gearbox supporting bracket, then I used a long socket and after some poking and trying, I managed to loosen it up. I managed to disconnect the electric wire for the reverse gear, but I saw no way to unbolt the gear shifter plate from the back of the gearbox. I figured I would try later. Now the gearbox was ready to be unbolted from the engine block. But how on earth was I supposed to fit a 19mm wrench on the bellhousing bolts, let alone to put force on it to unscrew them? It is a complete mystery to me how people manage to drop the gearbox without pulling the engine. Injection system dismantling After this, I had to clear everything that was in the way of the engine. This included the fuel distributor and air filter, the alternator (no power steering on this car), the vaccuum hoses, throttle cable, electrical cables and HT coil. Engine pulling After some research, I found several reports of people having pulled their M20 engine with gearbox still attached, so I figured I might attempt it as well. With the help of two people, the engine was pulled along with the gearbox and the gear shifter assembly, all at the same time! Previous Page - Next Page |
