Removing the head

I proceeded to remove the head. Because everything was so dirty, I decided to remove everything I could from the engine bay, including alternator, power steering, etc.

Bits 'n' Pieces
I was surprised by the various types of nuts, bolts and screws. There was no way I would ever remember what came from where, so if I threw it all in a big pot I would never be able to puzzle the engine back together.
So, I bought myself a bunch of little plastic bags and started labeling them. 'Alternator mount bracket and bolts'. 'Carburettor mounting nuts'. etc. I had to clean every part with alcohol and a toothbrush in order for it to be used again. That was really a job of patience, and I had never been so dirty in my whole life (incidentally, I couldn't enjoy my other hobby at the end of the day with my greasy fingernails, motor grease wouldn't look good on piano keys :).

Anyway, after having dismantled everything, I pulled the head with the help of my brother. And there it was, the engine insides. A whole new world was opened to me, those of combustion chambers and cylinder bores. Very impressive if you see it all for the first time.
The head gasket seemed not to have leaked at all (albeit it looked quite worn already) so if there was anything wrong at all it would be the head. Since I didn't have time to continue to work on the car day after day, I decided to oil the bores to protect them and leave it at that.
I also had arranged for another cylinder head from RJ, which I received by mail in a big package.
