Are these both in the same place? Both happen to not be working. I thought both are under the rear seat. I popped it open and looked, but decided not to touch anything yet. How ccan I test if it's the pump thats bad? Also, are there grounding issues for it? I couldnt find a ground wire when I looked. And yes, fuses have been chacked. Currintly, I think my engine is sucking the fuel in... so I kinda want to resolve this before smogging. Thanks!

Both are together under the rear seat on the right side. They are under an access cover that must be removed. The fuel level sender fits down thru the middle of the pump assembly. To test the pump, jump 12v and ground to the terminals bfiefly and listen for it to run.

Thank you , Dennis. But, I'm not exactly sure if I follow, b/c I took off the plate and didnt see any obvious grounds, and the wire connections I saw were 2? that were not the 'simple' single wire I was expecting, rather a cartridge?-type (sorry, dont know the technical term). Will I need to open it up further (do that double-screwdriver technique the manual talks about) to get the the wires you mentioned?

FYI: Yes, I'm a greenhorn.....

There are two connectors under there. One is a three terminal connector, this is your fuel level sender.The other is a two terminal connector, this is your pump. Add 12v and ground (brown wire) here and the pump should run. You could ohm out the pump using these terminals and a cheap multimeter and see if the circuit is good.

One note if you are going to pull the pump out, pull the fuel level sender first. It will save you a lot of aggravation if you first pull the level then the pump out.

If you need to replace the pump you can replace it with a $30.00 lifetime guarantee 72 Chevy Vega pump for a fuel injected engine.

"Installation is the reverse of disassembly."

Perfect timing on this info, Ray! I'll be diving in this weekend.

I ran an internet search and fount this;

AIRTEX E3027 [FUEL PUMP-ELECTRIC] (w/Fuel Inj., Cosworth) 32.65

From:
http://www.chevy-autoparts.com/partslookup.jsp

According to this website, the Vega was only carbed, and the vega Cosworth was FI. This was before my time, so I haven't a clue what the difference is between cosworth vs non. Just making sure I found the right thing.

No sir, I didn't. I realized I have a fuel pressure guage that I never used, so figured I better test before I spend more $$ (that I don't have). Still haven't gotten around to doing it, but I did use my bosch injection manual to help me do a quick test (jumpering some relays) to show me that fuel is being pumped to the distributor. I got side-tracked by other things (school, work, family, etc) and the PITA intake boot that took me 1 month to reinstall.

I used the chevy vega pump. Was nearly a perfect fit. I highly recommend.
