1983 E21 320i,M10,5 speed Getrag overdrive,alloys,Alpinweiss
Hi, I have a 1983 E21 320i 5 speed overdrive Getrag. The car has a rebuilt M10 and brakes. The car is in factory specification inside and out. I have 13 inch factory alloy wheels and have an opportunity to purchase some new rubber. I can choose between Yokohama, Kumho, and Bridgestone. What brand do you prefer? The car will be my year-round daily transportation but I live in sunny Southern California. Also, I take it out for some long, swift canyon drives so I want some good grip.

Thanks! :-)

Unless you are autocrossing or racing every weekend you can't beat Kuhmos for cost/benefit.

I have been impressed with Kumhos quality. However, all their 13" street tires are all-season oem replacement type. It's hard to find a good performance 13". Sumitomo has the HTR 200, and I think I bought the last 2 sets of Yokohama y-333 205/60's , and they are fantastic. I hope somebody else will start to manufacture a good street performance 13" , but I doubt it. Scour ebay for nos tires.

Falkin RT 615 are really great tires if they make you size.

HTR-200's on my car in 205/60/13. Loved them at first, now they suck in the wet, still decent dry. I thought I read somewhere that they only used the really sticky compound for the first little bit of tread depth and everything past that is different- makes sense based on my observations. I think they're a decent looking tire too, even on stock 5.5 inch wheels.

I'm going with Avon Tech M500's in 205/50/15 on my BBS wheels come summer.

Well I'm not sure about on 13's but the BMW Kumho Championship is the fastest UK race championship using road tyres. Thats got to say something.

Yeah... in the USthere really arent any true 'performance' tires in that size anymore. Yoko avid T4 used to be loved by many (if not all) - discontinued. Falken Zeix 502 was a good deal - discontinued (but try big-o tires and have them call... they got me some from warehouse @ 35/ea.. I should have stocked up). I think the HTR is the only tire left in 205/60/13 - everything else is the econo-tire @ 185/70/13 from my research.

The only other venue I have found is R-compund tires - even those seem modestly scarce. I have found 2 so far - victoracer and toyo ra-1. Once I burn through these Falken 502s - I plan on getting R-compounds for tack/auto-x.

the RA1 is a serious race tire- about as serious as you can get short of race slicks!

Some of the above tires aren't available in this size anymore though.

I show the Sumitomo HTR-200 available on tirerack.com. Not a bad tire, not a great tire. If you need a daily driver tire it's fine. If you need a race tire I'd go with the toyo- if your car is correctly aligned it should still give half decent tire wear.
