I think this used to belong to my mate Alan Wood; I'm fairly sure he got £4500 for it when mint, a couple of years back.

Although he put the original motor back in when he sold it, he used it with a 2.7L lump in! Scary.

I don't think 4250 is a high price for that car. I know i'm biassed, but Im a regular go-er to Pistonheads a more generic car site and have been testing the waters, mentioning E21s here and there and people who are not into them seem to have very fond memories of them. There are quite a few folk who would like to own one now- and they ARE rare cars.....times are changing...
Not enough folks know what they are and alot of the blame must go to the press-journalists who praised over rated heaps of rubbish from British Leyland and Daggenham dustbins but never did out E21.
I think the press more than anyone else has the biggest bearing on "classic status" and second hand value (even on cars this age) of a car and how it is remembered.
You see magazines STILL raving about the 1995-1998 Porsche 993s and this has impacted values, the values here in Germany for that car are now on a par with British prices. This is unheard of a car this "new" and a bit ridiculous (but not as bad as UK house prices).

This is quite right. I am still scratching my head as why a rarity like a Baur is COMPLETELY unknown and of no value in the US..........while some pissy third rate muscle car is.

The E21 never got any respect anywhere.......and still doesnt. The general public reguards it as something a bit sportier than a Volvo.....but not a performance car.

I guess it is a benefit to us.......as we can play around with junkyard cars for the hundreds.......while muscle car friends are paying $45k for a rusted out Camaro.

Times are changing though

witness this thread

See the appreciation the E21 has gotten? Someone there's put a bid in also. I believe it's the same Alpina that's up on ebay...

Yeah, but thats apples and oragnes. It is amazing that this car has been up for auction 3 times already and has not sold.

This is the top of the line, absolutely rare specimen......and it is still getting no respect.

On the other hand...........a no style, no special anything muscle car will sell for more than this prime E21.

yeah I agree to a point- although if it was a B6 I'm sure it woulda sold ages ago ... I guess some people would see a C1 as a 323i with go faster stripes (and he's selling at triple the price of a 323i in the UK )

of course for enthusiasts like us- we would give our eye teeth for it- so like he's pointed out in his q&a at the bottom of his auction- he's prepared to wait for the right person to come along no matter how long it takes.

the UK classic car scene still amazes me that people are spending thousands of pounds restoring crappy old front wheel drive austins and bagging out 323i's because they're tail happy??

Marquis... I think you're exactly right about the press on this issue! I drove my sister inlaws late 80s MG Maestro and it's an absolute pig- rattly, noisy and not particularly quick, yet I've read british reviews which rave about them/ enthusiast sites that absolutely love them/ and they used to race them!

it's not a patch on even a run down 323i!

Mayan,

There is a simple reason for muscle car pricing, aging baby boomers flush with refi money who are out to recapture their teen years. The guys buying the cars had them as kids. Me included. I would love to have the 67 GTO with the 389 HiPo, or my 64 Corvette, or my ....... all owned in my early years.

None of the boomers owned Alpinas or Baurs. I agree that the Baurs and Alpinas are underpriced at this time. They will come around but certainly not to the muscle car level of pricing.
