I'm installing aftermarket urethane swaybar bushing on both the front amd rear of my '81 323i.

My question is how tightly should the bushing grip the swaybar when tightened in the bracket?

In my case the diameter of the bushing seems a little large (+1-2mm) for the stock swaybar. They way the bushing is slit allows for easy modification to tighten the grip but again, how tight?

I have also seen mention lubricating the bushing on install. Any thoughts yes/no, type of lube etc.?

Thanks,

Bob

Pretty damn tight otherwise the sway will quickly wear out the bushings and be noisy.
You can easily shim it (between the bracket and the bushing to make it tighter.

When I grow up, I will let you all know

23mm (23.5) front, 17mm rear. Cant get bushes in .5mm sizes, so you generally go for the closest thing which is the above. The link pin bushes are 8mm internal diameter.

A silicone based lube is usually pretty good, doesnt really dry out. Usually if you buy bushes they will supply you with a little tube of grease, you need to lube pretty much any contact surface.

Basically, just tighten them on up to compress the mount tight against the body. Use new nyloc nuts and its all good.

A g clamp helps hold the mount in place if you dont have a spare set of hands
