If anybody’s looking for a Getrag 265 5 speed removable bellhousing trans (the one-year-only unit that mates to the M20 engine), there are two of ‘em at the Pick & Pull yard in Rancho Cordova CA (about 5 miles east of Sacramento, a couple of miles south of US 50 off Sunrise) in a pair of very clean 1982 E28 528e’s.
Cost should be under $100 out the door, but bring tools, since you’ll have to pull the trans yourself….. (the yard does have roll-around A-frame/chain fall units & wheelbarrows, so you can pull the engine & trans together, remove the trans, then wheelbarrow the trans out…..)
With E21 323 OD 5 speeds rapidly disappearing into M20 powered 2002’s, Getrag 265’s may be the best available option for retrofitting M20’s into E21s, since they are about the only other BMW 5 speed that both a) bolts up to an M20 and b) has the option to hook up a manual speedo cable. There’s also the additional benefit of the 265 being more or less bulletproof, especially behind an M20.
