Has anyone or knows of anyone who has fitted a front strut bar (like Hartge) to a 320/6??
I was just looking at the engine bay, and some pixs on the net (all 323i... sigh) and:
1 the clearence for the bonnet looks very tight
2 for the 320/6, looks like once the bar is installed the air cleaner and cover can't be removerd.
Comments anyone? |

The Hartge strut bar fits perfectly in a 320/6. It clears the air filter as well as the hood. I'm using this bar along with a 320/6 intake setup on my track racer, no complaints.
It's true you can't remove the air filter with the bar in place. However, you can remove the bar by unscrewing two 17mm nuts/bolts without removing the strut fixations, so removing the air filter is just 5 minutes extra work. I do it regularly to access the carb on track days.

I had a Hartge strut bar in my 320/6 and it caused a dent on the hood where those linkages are to the straight bar. |

Was it the same bar as in the above pic? Because I've used it on two different cars without any clearance problems.
Also, as far as hood clearance is concerned, the type of car (320/6 or 323i) shouldn't matter and won't make a difference.
Maybe your hood is not well aligned? |

Ha! I'm actually using the bar to keep the air filter on it's place, since the thread on the carb to screw it down is gone
If however, you securely mount the air filter on the carb and you have fresh silent blocks under your motor mounts, it won't touch the bar. If your silent blocks are soft, revving might tilt the engine in a way the filter touches the bar, but still nothing to worry about. |

I have a question. For the Hartge strut bar, is there a "left" and "right" bracket? Or can either brackets be used on either strut towers? |

could change the air filter and go with a more compact design. |

It is NOT easy to change the air cleaner for this car. As far as carb and the associated acessories are concern they are very unique. Even the Haynes Solex sevice manuals DON'T cover this carb. The MB which uses this carb has air cleaners almost twice the size!!!! |
