I had lunch at the Hard Rock in Kuala Lumpur. A rather strange export from the USA to KL.

Sort of related story:

I was on one of my archeological getaways in one of the most remote parts of Guatemala. I was visiting a site of the Ancient Maya civilization that you need either a donkey or a small 4x4 to get to.

Most of the very remote villages there are inhabited by people that dont speak Spanish. They still speak a Maya dialect.

There was a lady selling soda out of a straw hut. Another guy had taken his son, and the son got a Coke........but in the bottle. The son asked the father....."how do you open one of these things?".

Makes you feel old, seeing a teenager that only knows Coke in a can.

Makes you understand how prevalent American influence is when you can find a Coke in a village that is STILL speaking a language of a civilization that has been dead for 1,000 years.

It would have been a typical Mayan post if the 4x4 that you used to get to the village was powered by cold fusion.

Good story.

Hi Bruce,

I think it's wilder at nightime and it's very similar to Singapore too. In contrast, i was in Hard Rock cafe in Heidelberg in Germnany once in 90s, and it was just a like a quite bar.

It (KL) is quite a place. The Hard Rock is across the street from the Mandarin Oriental right? The Mandarin was nice but not as slick as the new hotels.

I got a cockpit jumpseat ride in a Malaysian 747-400 for the landing in KL.
