I have no idea what that means- series 1 or 2? Isn't it a three series?

He means '77-'79 being series 1, '80-'83 being series 2. I refer to them as Gen 1 and Gen 2. Rear shocks are the same, as is the replacement procedure.

They revised lots of things in 79, most noticable are the interior and the front suspension. If your e21 is built after august 79 it is a gen II, you have to be careful when ordering bits, use the VIN checker and it will tell you when it was built.

So i figured it out, I have a series 1, refering to the E21 not the E30. The nomenclature comes from the British press Haynes Bmw 320, 320i, and 323i 1977-1985 6cil Owners workshop manual.

All E21's are Series 1, E30 is series 2

u will need a SPRING compressor.

I would be careful ording your parts by VIN, cause some of the pre 77's were "upgraded" for whatever reasons to the post 78 specs.

you won't need a compressor for rear shocks...or at least you probably won't in my experience.

in my experience, no.

If you're replacing them with new factory springs you might need one to put things back together. With lowering springs you won't.
