Three track days, two bottom ends destroyed.
(Plus the odd valve or two)!! Both times a shell bearing disintegrated on the crank.

The engine is a 1977 M10 2 litre

Anyone have any views as to why?? Is there a problem with oil surge as both times it has been on extreme left hand cornering @ aprox. 7000 RPM. Would a baffle or windage plate help.

This is proving an expensive pastime - any words of wisdom would be appreciated as I don't want to rebuild it again without finding the cause of the problem.

Thanks, Chris

On E30 M3's you have to overfill the engine with oil on track days to prevent damage, so maybe a baffled sump would help. Have you thought about an uprated oil pump?
Or slowing down a bit

You'll eat a bearing in a hurry at that kind of cornering load and rpm!

Call Jim at Metric Mechanic. He's extremely helpful and will likely point you in the direction of some oiling system mods and ways to baffle the pan for high rpm turns.

Nitrided crank would be a good idea. Prevents seizure during momentary oil starvation and not to expensive.

Seems like we are agreed then - oil starvation problem!

Baffle plate seems to be a popular recommendation, but somehow I can't come to grips with the prospect of slowing down!!

Thanks guys

You can cryo the crank and use a crank scraper...

Shift to a higher gear or try a different rear gear ratio for the track. but fix the motor first.
