Are all "i" Mass Air Flow meters the same?

Is the MAFM from a 318i the same as a 325i?

No. The conversion to do is a M30 "127" AFM with 325i or e electronics, or M30 electronics if you are doing a turbo.

I need to get my 318i going because I am moving houses. That is the only thing missing from my E30 Baur. I want to buy something that will work on an M20 2.7 stroker later on.

These are the AFMs from pre-1988 cars. You need to swap in the m20 electronics. You can use a later one but then you have to use the existing electronics and tune the spring with a wide band O2 sensor to make it run right.
You can also swap in the M30 ecu (016) and electronics injectors especially for strokers but it will require tuning.
I have personally done the M30 AFM m20 electronics swap, significant SOP performance increase. The other procedures I have not done but read about on the www.e30tech.com forums.

You will need to take the AFM from a pre-1988 m30 (e28)and put in the eelctronics (not the spring and swiper) from an e30 (if you want more flow capacity) or you can just use an e30 afm.
