Hi,
I am planning to convert my 316 (M10 engine).

I found a gearbox set for M10 (3HP22) of a 320/4, but has been sitting for a while.

My question:
- will the auto trans fit from 320/4 fit into 316?
- Do i need radiator for auto gearbox? (ie does 3HP22 come with gearbox cooling hoses to the radiator?)

Any other gotcha?

The 3HP22 is cooled by the radiator. Either source a 320 auto rad or rig a separate cooler.

You are going to have wiring issues to sort thru, nothing major but the auto has a no-start in gear switch. Reverse light leads are going to have to come up into the shifter assembly.

I went from an auto to manual on the 323. I had to swap driveshafts out. I am pretty sure you are going to have to do the same. Make sure you grab the driveshaft from the auto 320 along with the slushbox.

Another question, how about the gearbox crossmember (mounting bracket), can i reuse my current crossmember meant for the manual trans?

Yeah, actually i am still missing the radiator and its hoses...hmmm

I seem to remember swapping out the "crossmember" on the Baur. I would bet it is different for you too.

Grab more than you think that you will need.

Why not try and find a 4HP22 from an E30 318i, E23 735, E28 535, E24 635. basically anything with an M10 or M30 will bolt up, just make sure its not a 4HP22EH which has an electronic valve body, making installation alot more difficult. The 4HP22 would give you overdrive, which would lower highway RPMs quite a bit and increase MPG
