i just want to be positive on this.ok so i broke my 4 speed tranny in the 323 a while back and i am going to be puting in a 5 speed fro a 325. i am aware that ill have to have the driveshaft cut reweleded and balanced, and that ill have to make a braket to hold the tranny inn and im still unsure what im gonna do about the spedo all the aftermarket ones i see are geardriven or electric ill have to look further into the cut off chop wheel thing.ive pulled the old clutch out and refrenced the part #s and it shows to be the same as the 325 1984 - 4/86 325e, es 2.7L (E30)

1982 - 4/86 528e 2.7L (E28)

1986 - 91 325i, is, ix 2.5 (E30)

1986 - 92 325ic conv. 2.5L (E30)

1988 - 90 525i M20 (E34) Engine.

for sure the clutch disc is the same. not positive about the rest but at $170.00 for the 325 clutch kit compards to the $500 somethin for the 323 clutch im gonna find out.the only thing im not real sure about as far as this whole swap is the throwout bearing which one do i use and does anyone have a part#?please help!

p.s. as long as its all out the flywheel is getting lightend and im gonna do the uuc evo 3 short shifter and linkage.hee hee

yes if you question is can you use a 325i tranny yes, but the speedo cable is different on the e30 vs the e21. Metric Mechanic sells something that allows the use of the e30 m20 325i tranny with your e21 gages.

Metric Mechanic sells a chopper wheel that is mounted into the driveshaft. This allows you to mount the speed sensor that is normally mounted in the diff housing of an e30 to a bracket which then reads the driveshaft mounted sensor. The sensor counts the teeth on the chopper wheel and sends a signal back to the speedo. I would imagine that the signal is in MHz. You will have to adapt an e30 speedo to the gauge cluster of the e21 for it to work. There are different reports as far as accuracy.
