look underneath your car at the steering rack and it is in the centre. It is usually coverd by a metal shield top and bottom.

The damper is suppose to help the self-centering of the steering.

it should look like a mini shock-absorber connected parallel with the steering rack between the rack's guide-plate/bearing-shell and the passenger-side tie-rod.

here's a pic of it from realoem (it's #15): http://realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/n/g/0.png

Mine looks like this but realoem lists two different ones. I suppose one is for RHD and the other is LHD.

Number 14

This is the one for LHD. Number 15

RealOEM shows the same part number on each.

I don't really know, but I don't think you have to take the cover off. I think it will slide out of one end or the other.

can see where it is located to the left of the pic below.

While you are there you might want to replace your rack mount bushes, they are a contributor to shimmy felt at higher speeds, so even if you dont have that problem now its something you can replace while you are there.

Dont forget to get an alignment done after you replace the boots.

Just installed it! wow, amazed! I didnt think it would make as much a difference as it did, I highly recomend,it. It really,,,dampens, the steering haha all the bums, all the slight curbs , and makes the ride alot smoother in general. I think this will save my arm in future long rides
