Hi guys,

im building a replica alpina gauge cluster for my 323 having recently acquired three vdo gauges oil pressure, oil temp and voltage. Similar to the alpina spec, but i was wondering is there any specific area(s) i should drill and tap the sender for the temp and pressure, i know exactly where to position it on the M10 engine, but the M20 is different,

will greatly appreciate your replies,

cheers,

Simon

There's a company who makes a fitting which replaces the sump plug. It allows for 2 sensors.
Can't remember the name of the company though.

i wouldnt use the sump plug, its far too low on the motor and i would worry about knocking it out or tearing it out of the tin.

Better solution is to use a brass or copper t piece and screw the oil pressure switch in one side and the sender into the other. Works fine.

I agree madhatter, how low the sump sits it would be a worry to fit a sensor(s)

i think i mite go for the copper fitting approach
but ill have manufacture to accomodate 3 sensors the (oil switch temp and pressure). maybe i can drill and tap the sump where the oil gathers for temperature

i wish i could upload my pictures to show you all but for some unknown reason im "denied access" so it says

I've used these on a few cars. Up to 4 sending units can be attached if need be.

i'd be fine with fitting the sensor to the sump plug...do you guys do rockclimbing in your e21's or something???
i'm sure it would be designed to cope with some sort or punishment...maybe i'm wrong. but i'd definately consider it...

dude, climb under an e21 and have a look at the body, front cross member, sump and exhaust next to the gearbox cop it from anything low. Big insane carpark speed bumps are the worst ones.

I must admit i dont get the idea of a sump plug pressure sender, how on earth does that work????
You want the oil pressure from the pumped oil circuit to show the true operating pressure.
The oil that sits in the sump pan is under no pressure till it gets sucked up by the pump.
Are you sure your not looking at oil temp senders....or am i stupid?

I think i mite go that adaptor, looks pretty good, i won't need to manufacture my own

i know from first hand how much my exhaust and sump more the exhaust though at one stage used to suffer from being low and mind you i only lowered it by an inch!

bloody speed humps they're probably the worst feature on the road how high they make them, although i may be wrong!

I've tried to upload the my pictures on my profile but with no luck so if you like to see my modification as well as the engine buildup its on
