I spotted a power steering rack and hoses at a local breakers but the engine is missing from the car so the power stering pump is not available.
I know the e30 m20 pump will fit my engine but are the hose unions the same as the e21?
Does it matter what car the rack comes from as i know the m20 crossmember differs from the m10?

Thanks Ian

If the car is a late model, it looks like you can use pumps from the following cars:
e12 528i,518i, m535i
e28 520i, 528e/i, 525i, 533i, 528e
e24 628csi, 633csi, 635 csi
And of course, e21's after 4/81.
These should be easy to find, so it sounds like you have power steering! Also, any hose shop should be able fab up any hose you need to adapt an e30 pump as well.

Hi

The racks swap over, the e30 pump is different, m10 & m20 block use different brackets. I.e. to mount a pump on the m20 you need the correct bracket which also holds the alt.

Use an e30 pump (they are lighter) with e30 lines , I went Pirtek (JCB hose supplier) who make up hydralic hoses and got them to mod the fittings.

Ok so i've been having a look at the PAS pump set up and think i've got it covered but i just want to run this by you guys in the know.
1: Add double pulley to crank which then gives me 3 belt grooves on the crank.
2: Use origional water pump belt as previous
3: Fit short belt to crank pulley / PAS pump
Thats it???????

My second thought is... the rack has a pressure feed and return, the pump only has 1 threaded pressure outlet, and what seems to be a gravity feed from the resiviour which will be jubilee clipped, where does the rack return pipe go to??

The return pipe from the rack go,s back to the fluid storage tank.A tank off a later bmw should fit as the pipes seem to be the same size. and that belt you need for the pas pump should be 825mm long (the same size as a mark one ford fester 1.1 ohv)..paul
