Took the 323 out for its first good run today, did 200 miles and it drove like a dream...only problem is when i got home a good oil patch appeared on the path!
How much of a PITA is is to swap the rear oil seal on the gearbox? will i need an impact gun to shift the rear nut or will a breaker bar do the job, i suppose i need a deep reach socket aswell to fit over the output shaft?
Any advise welcome.

Its very rare for the rear seal to leak as there are internal seals as part of the extension housing too. The majority of gearbox leaks come from the selector rod seal, it leaks everywhere and runs all over the box making it look like its leaking out the output shaft, but it usually isnt.
If however you are leaking engine oil (which i would say you probably are given the large amounts of oil being lost), then you are probably talking about the rear main seal which is actually part of the engine.
If thats the case it is a rather larger job and you will need to remove the gearbox to do so. |

Removing the trans output flange nut with an impact wrench will be very easy (once you beat/pry that lock washer out of there).
Otherwise, what you really need is to make up a breaker bar that bolts to the output flange to hold it in place while you break the flange nut free. Maybe my clutch was weak, but I found I couldn't break the nut free - it just turned the engine.
Impact wrench makes all the diff, although putting it back on I'd torque it by hand (only 75ft-lbs), for which you may still need to make up the bolt on breaker I just mentioned. |

Stripped the output flange off the box after work today, didnt mess about with the retaining washer i just turned a 30mm deep socket down to 38mm o/d which allows the socket to pass inside the retaining washer and unscrews it with the bolt.
Now i've seen the rear seal i don't think it was the cause of the leak, its still nice and flexible with no cracks so i think you could be right about the selector rod seal Madhatter.
Anyway i've got the rear output seal on order so i will replace that along with a selector rod seal.
I suppose i better check the vent valve is clear while i'm at it?

With the shaft all the way out, should usually be able to get at it with a pick and pull it out. If you cant, might have to take off the rear housing and drive it out from behind. |

Ok so after i bought the seals to do the jobs i got to work cleaning the oil off the gearbox and underside of the car.
Then i found the cause of the leak! A 1" crack in the tail casing running along the selector rod opening.
For a quick fix i've gobbed it up with some chemical metal, but i would like to replace the tail housing.
Does anyone have a tail housing lying around they would like to sell and ship for me?
Thanks Guys

Yeah, JB Weld is great stuff! I broke a bracket for my reverse gear inside the case of my Capri gearbox and JB Welded that sucker in there, not expecting it to hold at all. It actually held it for a few months until I could find a replacement case. |
