I took it for its first drive today and holy crap!!! With the motor work done this thing just rips!!!

There's detail work to do but it'll be driven from here on while the piddly stuff gets done.

Best of all...no rattles, sqeaks or groans. This is one tight puppy and holy buckets does it stick to the road!

What a beauty!! That's a lot of hard work that paid off. I absolutely love the M20, it makes nice sounds and has nice power. I always thought they sounded like aircraft engines, even before I knew the history of BMW. Have fun with it.

I finally got the motor to run better but it's still got a few bugs. The cam is pretty worn and makes a lot of racket so that's on the list to replace as well as the diff., which seems to have led a very hard life and has a lot of slop in it. Anyone got a LSD for the thing?

This weekend the interior gets worked on and more debugging of the mechanicals. All in all this will make a great car. My wife has claimed dibbs on it so it looks like I've got to come up with another project!

You are a wise and fortunate man. Why? because of the woman you made your wife. She has impeccable automotive taste.

I am envious in a multifaceted manner cuz you're car is also quite enviable. Much luck on the restor! I've got an LSD, but it's mine mine MINE!

A very good friend (who happens to be a professional photographer) stopped by today. He saw the Baur and decided to pull out his camera. While still lacking trim parts, he took some very good shots and vows to come back to do a bang up job once it's complete. Here's a sample.

More to come.......

Bill, any tips on getting the rear quarter window out and back in? Getting ready to re-spray my Baur and, working on the assumption that my tinted glass, rubber, and trim are NLA, want to be sure I get those quarter windows in/out successfully. Are they a piece of cake because of their size, or do they fight you for the same reason?

You're right on all counts. Everything is NLA.

Taking the windows out isn't all that tough. I used one of those nylon window tools that can be had for cheap at any auto parts store and worked my way around until they came out. One problem I ran across was the rubber had dried considerably. We used to soak snowmobile tracks in WD 40 to soften them up (less resistance/faster sled) so I tried doing it to the worst of them and it worked pretty well.

Putting the windows back in was something I didn't want to mess with so I hired it done. Through carelessness, the glass guys wrecked my brand spanking new trim pieces on both sides. It was no small task finding the trim even a year ago and I have tried through numerous sources to get new ones with no luck. I'm guessing they are extinct.

Worth noting....if you can avoid removing your rear section of rain gutter covers, DON'T!!!!! Mine got bent on removal and I figured they could be replaced. Wrong! They're gone too I tried bending up some straight pieces cut from a 320 front section but it looked like doo-doo. It looks as if I'll now try to build a jig matching the curve of the rear window and try that.
