I had to get the half-shafts from the diff to the rear wheels welded and turned. The rust had eaten away bad enough that the wheel bearings wouldnt go on snuggly.

Crap....

That's a pretty serious repair! How much did it set you back?

This may be a stupid question but why repair and not replace?

That's exactly what I was thinking. Probably pick 'em up for $25 each at the boneyard. Then you're not worried about your half-shafts being held to gather by a wing and a prayer.

Well, there is a difference between the 323i and the 320 half shafts. Not the same according to the independent BMW guy that helps me usually.

Turning them was $120.00. New for a single one would have been $160/ea.

According to ETK and RealOEM the same half-shaft is used on 4 and 6 cylinder E21s and the E12s with the baby sixes (M20). The only difference, I believe, is '77-'79 and '80-'82.

A little research goes a long way.

I understood the 320i to be 28mm and the 323i to be 30mm thick.

I thought they were the same.

they're not the same. I had a bad half shaft on my 323i rear disk conversion and tried to swap in my 320i half shaft in it's place, totally different diameter. I ordered a new one.

I have got a 320/6 and I am fitting a M535 diff using a Fritz's Bits conversion. Any idea what my shafts should be and whether there the best ones to fit?
Also does anybody know if there are anybody who sells upgraded half-shafts i.e. stronger and lighter?

Hi

Dave

You need the e21 drive cups and shafts, custom shafts no problem but they are £600 a pair. On an e21 i guess the cv joint is going to break first, so i would recon the ones you have and see how they last.

I have got through about 2 a year, but that's beacuse the way the exhuast is run over the inner one, it gets the heat, the grease turns to oil and seems to run out over a few months.

why don't you just make a heat shield and band clamp or tack weld it to the exhaust? Make sure it floats about 1/4" (5mm) from the surface of the exhaust. It can lower the surrounding temps by up to 100 deg (C). Sounds a lot cheaper and easier than replacing CV joints and boots several times a year.

Hi

Thanks for the idea but, i need a new exhuast as this one fails the noise test at the local track, and also 5mm is about the clearance between the exhuast and the cv boot.

The bad news is that bearing manufacturers dont make something to make up the difference. We checked the major bearing manufacturers and there was nothing.
