Anyone know if I can block off the port on the block which connects to the auxilliary air valve?

Or is the coolant being pumped through that port?

Could I just run a hose from the fitting on the block to the expansion tank?

I haven't answered your question because didn't know there was a hole where your aux air valve is. If I remember correctly mine is basically a splice in the hose going to the heater. Have you pulled the aux air valve, is there an actual hole in the block? If there is, the you could probably just route the hose going to the valve into the block, or leave the valve there with no air attachments to it.
