Bought the original E-21 "Spider" artwork that appeared in Roundel on eBay last month. Really nice.

323i engine. However, this was a Roundel proposal to BMW.....not a BMW project.
BMW had no interest in a convertible at that moment in time. Whats-his-face from the Green Party had made a huge fuss about the dangers of convertibles in the late 70's and car manufacturers were very much afraid of a US Federal Government ban on convertible vehicles.
This is why and how Baur got the subcontract to do a "partial" convertible in Europe. No money was expended by BMW to engineer a convertible, and the Euro market was covered with a relatively safe "partial" convertible.
This proposal was for a shortened wheel base and making it a true two-seater. It was to be 6" to 8" shorter.
The dash was supposed to have full racing cluster.
The hood was lengthened.....dont know why.
The front quarters had cut-out vents ala the CS of the era.
The dual-exhaust branched into four (two and two) exhaust tips instead of the two typical to the 323.
Stock leather Recaros, air dam, and BBS rims.

Thats what the people at Baur and the other smaller competitors were thinking. The 3-Series was severely lacking a convertible that was previously available in the 2002 eras.
Ralph Nader made sure to scare everyone in the auto industry. His fearmongering accelerated the adoption of seatbelts, and at the same time took convertibles off the menu for several car companies.
BMW+Baur was not the only "partial convertible" to hit the market. Targa tops, t-tops, and other versions of partial tops became very popular in the late 70's and early 80's as a result of the attacks on Big Industry car manufacturers. |
