Whats the deal with the heat shields for the headers? What are they protecting?

They are sort of ugly. I would rather use some insulating stuff on the underside of the hood than to put those things on my newly ceramic coated headers.

If your headers are ceramic coated already you have no need of heat shields, that's what the ceramic is for-and you thought it was just to look shiny...

I've seen paint blistered right off the "frame" rail by the Alpina header, which does come pretty close to the sheetmetal - but otherwise, I've always thought the heat shields were there to protect the plug wires...

This is the heat shield that goes right between the headers and the head.........would do nothing down by the frame.

The portion on the exhaust side is the part you'll have to worry about.

Plug boots sit right above the exhaust.

That's why I was saying just fabricate one from some steel or something. Have it mount to the exhaust manifold threads and fill in the position of the ugly E30 shields. If you give me about two weeks, I can get one fabbed with some 304 stainless steel for like 40 bucks (material alone is around $34).

I am out of my depth here but......

I thought of the same thing but was afraid of setting up a resonating panel. I would think that a solid shield would vibrate like a mofo.

Just theory.
