Looking good bro. Did you powdercoat stuff and jethot coat those Headers??

Post nr. 1301

They are BavAuto, and they come JetHot coated already. They used to offer them in black, and I should have bought them back then.........I guess a little chrome isnt bad.

The primaries are 36" equal length x's about 1.5" O.D.

Everything goes into a temp warehouse on Monday, and reassembly beggins. I should have the painted chassis by then.

I tried getting the headers made to Ken's specs....but wasnt able to find a tube bending shop willing to help. Header shops wanted $1500 and above.

A lot of this stuff was painted with POR-15 Hardnose paint. The stuff that is subjected to heat was painted with that Dupli-Color Engine Enamel spray can that you can get at an auto parts store. The clear makes it look powder coated.

HERE IS THE DEAL ON POWDER COATING:

I initially researched powder coating by taking the parts to shops I found in the yellow pages and getting quotes. the quotes were high enough to send me in the direction of painting it with POR15 or HighHeat.

HOWEVER, I regret doing that.

The way to get powder coating done is to search around for someone who does very repetitive industrial stuff. Find a sandblaster and give him all your stuff at once, and find a powder coat guy that does massive amounts of railings or boat tops or something like that.

These guys throw it in, and dont give a damn about quoting high prices for single pieces. They basically throw in your stuff with a big batch of other stuff and give you a price based on beer money......since it really doesnt cost them much more.

If I would have found these guys earlier, I could have saved a lot of money and time. The powder coat guy just throws in the stuff when he does his daily batch of black pieces.

When you think that each spray paint can costs you between $5.00 and $6.00 and POR15 is more expensive than champagne...........well, I could have saved a lot of money just in paint.

You just cant go in with a special color powder coat, or ask the sandblaster to do sheet metal. this means that they have to change the medium that is set up in their equipment for mass quantities.

Sheet metal requires fine sand that reuires them to go over each piece several times..........and powder coaters use black, red, and white. Dont go in there asking for hot pink or neon green for your ricer!

Gearbox I just sandblasted and painted with the HighHeat Dupli-Color spray can. It came out really nice.

It didnt need servicing, so I didnt want to take it apart just to paint it.

I hope the sandblasting didnt get anything inside, but that thing is pretty well sealed.

If it does...........well, thats just an excuse to get a 5 speed.

I want my gearbox to look just as good, so thanks for explaining the process! I just have to decide whether to paint the sport or overdrive.
Have fun assembling your car, I'm looking forward to more pictures

The toughest part was hunting around the animal shelters and finding four..........I mean 16.....equal height ones.

Its really convinient because all you have to do is wave a doggie treat in front of them and the car moves anywhere you want it to.

Well.........15 out of 16 equal height stands isnt bad. That side of the car always seems to lag behind though.........

No. Its the metallic silver that M3's come with now. It just seems to reflect the blue sky in some angles.

I'm not knocking it by any means, but why did you go with a non body color for the engine bay?

Actually, the paint shop guy got it wrong. I wanted the trunk interior black as well.

I think it is sort of like the interior....you open up the guts of the beast.....

The hood and entire front will be the body color. Once they are bolted on, only the inside of the engine bay will be black.

I think it will look nice with the hood open and the cabin interior will be matching in black leather.

I dont think I would have done it if it were a regular hard top.......but the Baur is already got a two-tone thing going with the black top and black roll bar elements.

just from my own personal experience...you really really need to have some sort of resonator in the factory location. You'll hear every little rattle, pop and backfire if you don't.

You'll like the sound of that system. Mine's pretty much the same....headers back to the mufflers w/no resonater. There's just enough bark to it to let you know something's under the hood!

OK, I am about 10 hours from finally finishing. The only thing holding me back now is that I decided to install a Split Second ECU controller. The air/fuel mixture is totally off, and tunning it will take about 10 hours. If I had gone stock, I would already be running.

MOTRONIC CONVERSION - ETA BLOCK

BAUR ROLL BAR

BAUR SOFT TOP LATCH - Powder Coated

Is that exhaust system very loud? MA has a law against that. You can not have aftermarket mufflers on or the state police pull you over and give you a ticket.

PS: I have all the glass and interior out on my 323i and am putting the headliner back in.

I can not wait to finish it up and put the 2.9 m20 in it.

Mayanarch
I have Bruce's powdercoater in Atlanta as a contact. He seems very reasonable. Here is an example of parts I had powdercoated:

JJ,

The powder coating is a topic that is on my mind now that I am looking back. It can be expensive if you go to a guy that specializes in restoring auto parts.

That said, I am not happy with the durability of the spray can stuff. There is an "appliance enamel" in spray can that is very good.

Other than that, the best way to go about this is to find BOTH a sandblaster and a powder coater that does mass produced work............and that will throw your stuff in for beer money.

The only drawback is that you basically have to stick to standard black, red, or white powder coats as they wont do a setup for you under those terms.

I found a guy that does metal fences and exercise equipment.....and who doesnt mind putting a boxfull of parts in along with them.

The powder coating companies that advertize for restoration and piece work are really expensive...but a guy that does it in batch is much cheaper than even spray cans.

If I were to do this again........and I dont know that I ever will take on one of these three year projects again............I would sandblast every metal part.....and then take it in a box to get powder coated as described.

That said, I think the most important thing you can do for cosmetics is to use a plastic tint to restore your parts. Even new rubber parts need this stuff. It is a two stage step, and can be found at upholstery supply shops. The first step is a solvent that opens up the pores, and the second is spraying the tint. I think the company is called SEM. That is your biggest bang for the buck. It makes all the difference in the world with our cars, and the cheap plastic, rubber, and vinyl they are detailed with.
