OK, so calibrating my KPH speedometer apparantly costs a pretty penny. It seems a lot easier to couple a digital MPH speedometer that is easily calibrated to my new diff gearing and tire size.
How can I rig it so I can have the KPH functioning for looks......and a small MPH digital readout for accuracy? |

why not just use an electronic E30 speedo grafted into the housing? A simple chopper wheel circuit will drive it without need for a differential swap.

Hmmmm.....cool idea. Is the radius of the display the same?
Please explain how you would calibrate it? |

you shouldn't have to calibrate anything (assuming you use an E30 speedo and the correct number of teeth for the chopper wheel) and the gauge face size is the same if I recall correctly.
This also will allow you to graft in BMW cruise control down the road.

This whole quandry begun because I mixed and matched gearing. I have a 3:91 LSD and 16 inch rims that will throw things off.
I dont understand. Why wouldnt I have to calibrate an E30 mechanical just like an E21 mechanical speedo? |

16" wheels won't matter if you're using the correct size tire. If you want the speed to be right with a 3.91 and you're using the correct size tire then you just need to use the speedo and drive gears (in the trans) from a US 320i, preferably a later one with a normal (not 85mph) speedo.
Should be easy enough to source the parts- I have most or all of the above if you can't find them locally.

How can you tell it came from a 320i if all you have is the console in hand?
So I would have to swap out my tranny?
I am lost....
What should I be looking for? I may very well want some of your parts. |

From looking at ETK it appears that a US speedo can connect directly to the euro trans and read the speedo correctly as long as you're using the US rear end. You're in luck!
