OK, on my daily driver E21 I am installing a radio. I found the "accessory" purple wire and spliced into it. However, I could not find a 12V continuous that I could tap into easily without fear of screwing something up......so I ran a new red wire from the radio 12v cont in to the white fuse on the fuse box that is labeled "RADIO". I basically wrapped the copper around that fuse mount and wedged the fuse between the copper wires.

Is this Kosher?

Is this 12V continuous like Pioneer Electronics demands?

Not really. You've put too much work into the car to do cheesy work.

I think there is a blue/white in the console area that is constant. I will check and get back.

This is for the daily driver E21 that I recently got....not for the Baur. I am working blind.....sifting through cobwebs of old electrical splices.....not knowing what is what.

This only further confirms that the best way to do any restoration work is to simply pull the entire thing apart and undo all the improvisations anyone else did before you.

This all started because the ACC and CONT12v that was in the old radio had an intermitent power outage problem.

In the center console you'll find a four pin connector. It has 12v constant, 12v switched, 12v for illumination and ground. You should be able to use these connections.

now that I think about it this connector may only be on the 80 and up cars. Isn't yours an early one?

Sorry my memory is not good, just throw a test lamp on the connections on the back of the ignition barrel. One of them IS a perm live.

does permanent 12v mean that it is direct from the battery? Wouldnt this drain the battery?

none right now :(
its a constant 12v from the battery, anything constant will have a drain if something draws from it. Powering memory doesnt take much juice, so its a tiny draw on the battery

For the record...yes, the best source for 12v continuous is directly to the battery. I tried several other sources, and they created intermitent power that caused miniscule puases in the songs.

Modern dash units come with an "ACC" wire for accessory that should be spliced into one of the E21 violet/purple wires. This will switch off the unit when you turn the car off, and turn the unit on the first click of the key in the ignition.

The latest units make our cars as user convinient as the new 3-Series.

I turn on my daily driver E21 and my cell immidiatly connects to the car stereo for hands free talking. Set it up once....and it does it every time.

I have my ENTIRE music collection on two CDs. The streo unit browses through the folders of MP3s. No more scratched CDs or sifting through CD pouches for the song I want.

I can actually download a song on my cell, and play it immidiatly through Bluetooth connection.

I think I can even get GPS through Verizon that will talk through the stereo via Bluetooth......sound of music decreasing and returning automatically.

I couldnt install any of this on my X5 lease......which I am now VERY, very, VERY happy to let go.

Oh, did I tell you the best feature about my E21: NO FRIGGIN CAR PAYMENTS & insurance that is 1/3 of a new car insurance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I recall correctly my E21 has the ACC option.

Yes, one of the connections is to the purple and white ACC. The other has to be directly to the battery.
