Hello, all. It seems I need a new (ignition) distributor. The car was running and apparently is now breaking rotors according to the auto-ER it's in right now. They replaced the broken rotor, ran ok for a bit, then it broke on them, too.

I really cannot afford a new one (http://oem.thepartsbin.com/parts/thepartsbin/wizard.jsp?year=1980&make=BM&model=320-I-001&category=All&part=Ignition%20Distributor&dp=true or the $300+ quoted), so I am wondering if anyone has a good used one I can buy.

I am in the Bay Area
Car: 1980 320i

If I don't hear back, I'll try to call Bay Motor Wrecking http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/495447766.html or if anyone has the number to another BMW wrecking yard, or get the one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-2002-E21-320i-Bosch-Distributor-Cap-Rotor_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33690QQihZ010QQitemZ200178705799QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Thanks for any help you can provide.

honestly, i say buy a couple used ones, clean them and use the best one. increases your chances of getting a good one. also ken danielson wrote up how to rebuild them a while back. check the archives for dist rebuild info for m20s too, its the same process.

Thanks, Grant. YIKES! 100 for a used one - I may as well buy the new OE one for 100 and change (no shipping or tax). Can you imagin the irony? You had just suggested I buy a few... you cursed me, dabnabbit!

I've got one from my '82-worked well when removed a year ago for EDIS conversion. I'll be out of town Mon through Wed evening. I'm north of SF 45mi or so. $25 if you can wait until I return. I can ship it too-you pay shipping.

Hello, Ken. Shipping will probably be just as much as the gas to drive there :p

Can I pay via paypal (can you send an IMS for your email address if so)?

It would probably make more sense to ship directly to the shop. Here is their information.

ACE auto repair and tire
ATTN: Tom Fredrich (Henry - white BMW)
2560 San Ramon Valley Blvd.
San Ramon, CA 94583

925 743 1552

PS: Thank you!

Hello, Ken. I'm still interested in your distributor. Please let me know if you are still able to sell and ship (IMS sent with info). I don't mean to be a B^, but the shop has been kind enough to wait for me to get the part, but I don't want to push their generosity. I realize you are busy, so if you are unable to, I'll just get the reman one online (probably Mon night/Tues morning if I don't hear back from you). Otherwise, hope all's well and everyone enjoys their weekend.

Cheers

Don't know about the Bay Area Pick&Pull yards, but the local (Sacramento) locations always seem to have at least a half dozen 320's on hand - I can't remember seeing cars with the distributors missing, so there shouldn't be any problem finding one....

Cost for a distributor @ P&P shouldn't be more than $25 or so, and it'll have a 30-day exchange option included in case it's bad. Keep your old (bad) one to turn in for the core charge.

Well, if a junkyard one costs ~25, I owe Ken more than just a beer and appreciation.

I was finally able to drive the car today and man... it felt good! Looks like they adjusted timing and idle for me 'cuz I didn't detect the popping, the poweris there, and the idle is ~1300 (not 2000 like before). Many thanks to everyone, especially Ken (they got it in Tues and finished the job Tues noon, but I wasn't able to get the car until today). Looks like it just might be ready for some auto-x's this summer!! Now, to get through this one last final for Fall semester. Have a great winter break/happy holidays, all!

Now that you've got it running bring it up to Chrissy Field in SF about noon on the 29th. Looks like a couple dozen e21's will show up and hang out.

I'll be there with my DD '78. The '82 hot rod the distributor came out of won't be on the road for a while...

no , should have specified that. Great friend's.

Btw Ken, I got it to start by fixing up the grounds but its draining the battery again so i defiantly need to change out the ig switch as suggested.

Thank you so much for the help, ill keep my fingers cross that changing this out does the trick and keep you posted.

regards and merry Christmas to yourself, mellow and everyone reading this

Hey, Ken. After leaving late (appointment to interview new roommates) and getting a little lost (missed the turn off for Chrissy Fld and headed towards GG Bridge) it was 2:30 and it seems I missed y'all. I've never been there before, so even though I missed the event I had a pleasant self-driven tour of the area. How'd it go?

PS: Not much time to work on the e21 as I was in LA last week so it's still non-opp.

Of the 10 cars expected only 5 showed and an accidental e21 Alpina B6-he just happened by so he stopped and talked for a while.

We're going for another meet the end of Jan just east of I80 near Vallejo. There's a decent little park there with some twisty roads on the way out.

Awsome. Please do post up the details when you get them. School starts again att he end of Jan, but the work load should be light enough at that time.
