I would like to know if anyone here has installed additional grounding cables in their E21's? If yes, can you advise:

1 Did it make any improvements to the car?
2 What type of cables did/should you use?
3 Which are the additional grounding points did you use?

Thanks and cheers

hi chupchup

I added an extra grounding strap from one of the rocker cover nuts at the back of the head to the firewall just like the later e30 on BMWs.

I just used the stock cable for this from an e30 - it was part of my L-Jet swap.

didn't really notice any difference, although I was not really having any earthing issues before that.

Cheers

I added two additional ground/earth cables. One from the cam cover to the where the coolant expansion tank sits and the other from the left front strut turret to the inlet manifold.
My shell is so rusty that it made quite a difference. With the headlights on and blower on the car could still rev reasonably higher without misfiring but still not as good as with anciliaries switched off. I would still have hot start probelms though, in the summer when the engine was hot and the ignition/starter circuitry was hot and its resistance had increased....but less so...

well I guess the kit's suggested places might be a start... although I'd hook one to the head as opposed to the throttle-body like the factory BMW fitment.

Some locations for earthing:

Firewall - helps electrics inside,
Head/Block - spark plugs etc
Alternator -
AC compressor if you have one

Can you make ground wire out of any copper cable.

I have some leftover thick copper speaker cable....the 1/4" thick kind.

Would that work?

Not sure about speaker cables - no doubt that they are conductors, but can they take the current and heat levels in the engine bay? I would think the insulation might be the first to go...

Just guessing.

Will a bad ground cause start up problems?

It would not help... I would think it would have some impact on the start-up. May also have some impact on battery life.
