Some of the recent M54-engined cars are available with 6-speed boxes. Not sure how many different models there are, or the manufacturer... but the gear ratios are reportedly:
4.35
2.50
1.66
1.23
1.00
0.85
So we have slightly closer ratios than the Getrag 260/265 boxes which had a 3.83:1 first gear (but pretty close to the 320i 5-speed). Of course, there is also a wider spread.
With the ratios overall being shorter, the tires on e21s being relatively small diameter, and the available differential ratios not being particularly tall... maybe it's not very helpful in the case of a torquey six cylinder.
The numerically lowest diff ratio that came in e21s was 3.45:1 right?
Would a 6-speed box from the M54 and similar engines bolt-up to any of the M40/M42/M43/M44 engines and sit at the correct angle? |

It should bolt up OK, angle will be off ten degrees if I remember correctly. A little scrap steel and a few spare shift selector rods to cut up and you'll have a workable solution.
Unless things have changed you should be able to use any normal M20 flywheel and clutch with the new 6 speed. You might have to use a special throwout bearing or some sort of machined adapter sleeve though.
I'm waiting for the prices on the 6 speeds to drop a little more then I'm gonna jump on this idea.

Agreed. Someone suggested that I should do a 6 speed SMG from an E46 M3. I laughed. Then I started seriously contemplating it. |
