At some point I noticed that my oil pressure light stays on for a long time (about 4-5 seconds) when I start my 320i. I don't think it has always been like this. So today I bought a gauge and hooked it up. Sure enough it does take about 5 seconds to build up pressure (warm or cold start doesn't make a big difference), but it tops out at 38psi at idle! Isn't that higher than normal? At 3000RPM it is about 80psi. |

I put 10w-30 in it last fall when I started driving it for the winter. It's still cold here now, high today was probably 50 F |

From my experience, the oil pump on 4-cylinder engines does not last as long as the oil pump from the 6-cylinder engines... and the book says that oil pressure at idle should be 0.5 to 2.0 bar (7.25 to 29.0 lbf/squareinch), while at maximum speed should be 5.0 to 6.0 bar (72.5 to 87.0 lbf/squareinch). Hope this helps |

When I had the engine apart 5 years ago I asked the machinist about replacing the oil pump. He looked at it and said "nah, these kind never wear out." Now I'm wondering if he modified something on it (rotor to housing gap??) to increase the pressure.
