I refurbished and repainted the old rear brake dust shields. I had to bang these things back into shape....but they never ended up perfectly flat again. Now they are giving me rubbing noises against the discs.....intermitently, as it seems they change shape as they get hot.

Do I need these things? Why did they put shields on to protect the inside of the rear subframe..........as they dont seem to help keep the brake dust off the wheels?

I always thought that at least one purpose was the other way around.. to keep stuff off the brakes!

It could also be that your rotors are heating and expanding enough to rub, too? If you can locate the site, then I guess hammering a bit more might do the trick.

Yeah, that would make sense......more sense than my theory.

I got rid of the noise by bening it back once more. Hopefully it will stay that way.

Mine looked like a bit of swiss cheese, so I binned them. I couldn't get hold of new ones, so I hope that they are not too important.

On 323 rear discs, the dust shields also make up the backing plate for the parking/e-brakes - the retaining pins for the drum brake shoes attach through slotted hole in the backing plate.

It would probably be possible to cut away the part of the backing plate outboard of the e-brake shoes, but I'd think there'd be problems with the e-brake if the whole backing plate were deleted.

My trusty mechanic left an "extra" parking brake spring in there. That was the noise.

And to think that I decided not to do my own brakes because I didnt want to be careless.

That aside, I he did a good job and I think doing your own brakes is suicidal.

Good thing you found the source of your problem.

It's funny yo umention that, though... b/c doing my own brakes is like one of 3 things I actually can do on my own.
