My friend's E21 has a weird problem. There is a visible electrical drop when presses the brake pedal. You hear the gas pump go slower and the lights dim. The batt light comes on.

To my knowledge, the brakes have nothing to do with the electrical......so what could this be?

The brakes DO have something to do with the electrical system, the brake light circuit. I would check there first.

Fuse to switch to lamps to ground, check it all.

Also happens when the battery gets low - that brake light circuit seems to draw a fair bit of current.

Also check for shorts in the instrument cluster - I've had problems in this area causing similar symptoms.

brakes draw around 40 watts...not too much really.

I would suspect ground and other electrical connections. The single M5 bolt that carries the positive current in the fuse box can be problematic as well- I've seen them melt from the current and heat.
