M20's were put in every year so that's easy.
How big? Get a tape measure and write some numbers down. I measured a BMW M62 and it will fit with a lot of work. A GM LSX engine will also fit easily. It all comes down to how much work you want to do and how much $$ you want to spend... BTW, getting an engine in there is really the easy part all the details like wiring, exhaust, trans and drive shaft interface is what takes the time and $$.

Just put an m20 in it, stroke it to 2.8 liters and if you want more power you can always turbo it. |

Yes, but the new M3 engine bay is more like the old 5 series. This E21 chassis is much smaller.
You can do anything if you have the money and time. I guess you could even figure out a way to put a Rolls Royce jet engine in the body......but at some point it stops being an E21 and starts losing its balance and driveablility.
An M20 was meant to be in this chassis. You can do a 3.0L turbocharged with an m20. If you need more than that........spend your money on a downpayment for a new m3. |
