So my 323i starts, but i have to give it gas and hold the idle up manually as it warms up.
It seems like it has no cold start function since the mechanics worked on the car to make it pass California smog laws.
what could it be? I imagine if they disconnected something it would be something simple to re-connect, or so I would hope..... |

"Tuned to pass smog"
I bet you will have to reset the mixture.
Might even want to check the timming, Do you have a timming light?

Sounds like the "additional air valve" may be disconnected.

Have you checked the cold start valve? make sure it is spraying extra fuel when the engine is cold

the cold start valve only sprays for a maximum of 8 seconds, and depending on temp it will spray much less or not at all. Thus it will have no effect on the mixture on a cold engine except when cranking.
As Jeff said, richen your mixture up. If that doens't help then you should clean your WUR.

As it is now, it has no increased idle during startup, it will not startup at all with out a bit of gas – I’m guess that because it is hot however, it is easier to start up than during the winter when It died often.
The car smells rich to me – By saying this I mean that if I stand by the tailpipes especially during startup it smells like gas.
In response to your replies:
“Additional air valve” is installed and tested.
I think the cold start valve is not activating either because it in itself is broken, or because the WUR is broken.
I am somewhat afraid of dealing with either of these myself – are they easy to reconnect and disconnect?
