problem.....

81 US spec M10 E21, 170K mi, 5 speed. All maintenance up to date (fluids, oil, air & fuel filters, valve adjustment, cap, rotor, plugs & wires), no cracked hoses, fuel leaks, or corroded electical connecters that I can find.

Problem started about a month ago as a slight hesitation or stumble under very light throttle between 2500 & 3000 rpm, has gradually gotten progressively worse. Is very obvious in the lower gears, is now noticable under consistant throttle openings up to 4000 rpm, disappears under moderate to hard acceration.

I don't have any formal training on K-jet systems, and have NOT done any diagnostic work yet (fuel pressure checks, etc) - from the reading I've done so far in the factory manual and Bosch fuel injection book, I'm wondering if the fuel distributor piston is binding in its bore, causing the sensor plate to move erraticly, in turn causing erratic metering of fuel to the injectors.

This is my daily driver, and I need to address the problem asap - any thoughts from anyone with direct experience with K-jet systems will be much appreicated....

My recommendations
Seafoam 3 ways

Rebuild WUR
Change o-rings in pressure regulator
Rebuild ignition distributor

Install vacuum gauge and make SURE your vacuum system is up to spec

Set timing
Set mixture again

This should solve almost all problems if you know that normal maintenance is up to date.
