I have an LSD unit which I want to add clutch disks to in order to increase lockup. Has anyone done this? Are clutch disks available?
Thanks

They are available. Walloth nesch lists them in the catalog. I think you will have to call Andy at EAS since it may be a special order item.

You can add two (2) clutches and corresponding washers, one set on each side, to the stock case and raise it to a 45% locking percentage. Anything higher will necessitate machining of the inner case to get the other two/four to fit. Two more raise it to 65%-75% depending on who you are talking to. More than this is not possible, well it is but it will require using an open diff and welding the spider gears for 100%. You must add the washers as you are adding the clutches because if not you will not have a limited slip diff afterwards.

Since you are already buying the clutches for the added slip percentage you may as well buy replacements for the four stock ones that are in there already. No sense in rebuilding a diff and using the same clutches. So a total of six will be purchased. EAS has a diff re-seal kit, side and pinion bearings, and locking pinion washer to complete the build. Coat the new clutches with a little bit of moly grease on each of the friction sides so that they break in properly. Use a high quality synthetic diff oil with the appropriate limited slip additive so you keep the clutch chatter down. After installing drive in figure 8's for about five minutes so to work the oil into the clutches.

Ray what are the washers (what number?)you are refering to?
Also do you have to add one "inner" and one "outer"?

they are the number 6 on the diagram. Number 7s are the clutches. So it would be #8 a number 7 followed by the #6 another #7 and another #6 for 45%

Number 5 are the wavy washers.

Thanks Ray.
In the mobile traditions manual they list a part number (33 14 1 203 806) for the clutch which they refer to as an "inner disk" but not for the washer which they refer to as an "outer disk".
wallothnesch doesn't list either in their price list. I'll check with Andy at EAS.

Can't find the clutches anywhere. Haven't gone to the dealer($$$) yet but looks like I might have to.
I was told the only way to get clutches and spacers is to buy another used diff.
I have a completely built up 65% lockup 3.64 but I want to convert a 3.45.
Any of my Eurpean brethren have any sources for these scarce parts?

All you need is the pinion and ring gear out of the 3.45 to change your diff over to the 3.45. I have an early 1978 323i diff that I think is a 3.45 I can check if you want.

I remember the day we took apart Don's C1 diff he mentioned about being able to order the friction plates. I will ask and see if I can get the info for you.

*Edit* Sorry the diff case was stamped 11.40 meaning it was a 3.64.

ok k this is so damn confusing where do a total of six come into play. if the discs are the #7 then there are only 2 in each diffrential then i would add 2 more #7 and 2 more #6 to make it 45%. so why would you say to buy six? is there any way someonecould take a paint program and point arows with #s where the new discs and washers being aDDED WILL GO??????? i have both my 3.91's apart right now anxiously awaiting more lock. any help would be apreciated!!!!!

From looking at Realoem it looks like the outer disk was made in 3 different thicknesses, 1.9mm (33 14 1 203 803), 2.0mm (33 14 1 203 804), and 2.1mm (33 14 1 203 805).

I would guess you need to simply add an inner clutch disk, #9 (33 14 1 203 806); an outter clutch disk, #8 (#'s above); and a diaphram spring, #6 (33 14 1 203 307) on each side. Unless the stock 25% lockup uses 2 clutch sets on each side, you would order 4 of each of the part numbers to replace all of the clutches.

I want to know how to do this too, my LSD isn't going to last long with the turbo.
