Earlier this year I had acquired a getrag 265 transmission from a 1982 528e. Using the information posted on another site for the conversion of the 265 to mechanical speedo drive the necessary parts were collected and the transmission converted. At the same time the local oil seal shop was visited and the seals replaced. Now the 265 trans sports a drive gear along with the speedo drive shaft(many thanks to Mobile Tradition for the parts). Total was 70.00 for the gear, 80 cents for the drive gasket, 8.00 worth of Amsoil gear lube, and 5.00 worth of seals and anerobic sealant.
Basicaly the fancy part of this conversion is the M20 bellhousing/23 12 1 209 780 since the two piece 265 transmission is available on many of the e12, e23, e24, and e28 models. The sport(dogleg) Getrags fit as well since all you really need to do is unbolt the trans from the bellhousing so you can swap it out.
Hmm, not a bad idea for track days. Of course the 3.45 diff might need to be changed to the 3.25 but it is not that important.
As a late add on to this thread. Most of the e12s and early e23s had 265 trannies with mechanical speedo drives in them. Further simplifying the install provided you have the correct bellhousing. This is not an issue if you happen to find some of the euro 525 m20 equipped e12s which bolt on directly. |

Has the spedo been calibrated for the drivetrain? If you swapped diffs, you'd need to recalibrate again, correct? |

If the 3.25 rear end is swapped in there with the close ratio trans then it would have to be recalibrated. But as stated since this was going to be used for track events it would not matter.
2nd speedo I have is calibrated for a 265 with the 3.45 rear end and the 15X7 rear wheels with 50 series rubber. May or may not be off by a little, but then again that is what Valentine 1 is for. |

Haven't had an accurate speedo in years, as Ray suggested a Valentine One is enough.
One problem though. It is tough to do a TSD Rally without one. This may be the motovation I need.
Isn't there an easier way like a sensor on the drive shaft and an eletronic speedo?
Guess it would be way more than $70 and change.
Nice low buck solution Ray! |

Nice mods ray and at budget costs too. My Getrag 240 project is planned for this weekend. But we are going to have small e21 gathering in Kuala Lumpur plus, some guys invited me to Sepang Track on sunday... 5 speed WR 240 that is. I will be without speedo soon after the conversion.
