Do we hate roadfly? Well, it depends.
Roadfly is what helped me to a new cylinder head for the 320/6 (albeit very indirectly).

However, the roadfly policies suck, and their forum systems suck. Since that's basically all what roadfly is made of, I guess we can say they suck

The only good thing about roadfly is something that hasn't got anything to do with roadfly itself: the E21 enthusiasts themselves. Time to move over I guess

yeah, so what we need is all the knowledge, minus the gestapo.

Sorry, but as a casual visitor and such, I can't complain much abt roadfly. There is always going to be something 'wrong' with a server. It all depends on the independant user and his/her preferences and needs. It has proven a convenient and user-friendly environment for me to watch and learn as a bystander, just as the e21 digest has been. I view both because each has its own character. Perhaps its my lack of experience in being blocked or harassed by roadfly admin... but I am certain that in due time the administrator(s) and/or veteran users here will wish to black-list someone here.

Please understand, I'm not overtly "defending" roadfly, merely attempting to add some fairness to the conversation as I strive to avoid "HATE" in anything (except dodge neons!!!!!!!!!!). Good day, all... happy trails.

Henry

The thing is, roadfly is nothing but an intermediate. They offer a service people can choose to use or not, but roadfly itself doesn't offer any help or information at all.

Roadfly also doesn't do anything specifically towards us E21 enthusiasts, we (the E21 users) are just a byproduct of their forum system, which is more popular in forums of more recent models (and they get their attention).

I don't know about others, but I find the thread organisation in roadfly a total disaster. Discussions drop off really fast as new ones are added, and one can hardly 'oversee' the thread, since it is segmented in many pages. Also, since each post has it's title you're bound to have cluttered thread views after a certain number of posts, and threads need only one title in the first place anyway. The rest are just replies to the topic starter. If, at some point, titles would be needed for an individual post it should be started as a new thread, as it would most certainly be off-topic anyway.
Add to that, at roadfly email addresses as well as IP addresses are broadcasted to anybody, including abusers such as spammers. One hasn't got the ability to edit one's posts, either. I find this terribly lacking in functionality.

I have quite some first-hand experience with internet forums, and I have written my own system to my best of knowledge, wanting to keep it integrated and simple. Roadfly qualifies for neither of those two.

So bottom line, doesn't matter if we hate roadfly or not, what matters is that there are better alternatives out there, and I hope this site to be among them. At any rate, and contrary to roadfly, I am listening to your suggestions and will change anything to improve the site for it's users.

I know im not as experienced as most others, yet I indeed see what you mean about the conversations dropping off (which is why i suggested that email notification option thing). As for the editing, i am torn both ways. Of course I like being able to correct mistakes, but I can see where the problem comes if someone edits the post AFTER its already been read by someone, and therefore are likely to be unaware of the changes.

I/we DEFINITELY see you doing what you can to please us all, which in any task or environment is, again in my opinion, impossible. (IE: if i make a suggestion and it doesnt come true, oh well. I know you have your reasons, whether it be technical and/or personal.) As I posted a while ago... I COMMEND THEE!!!!

PSt: sorry about dragging this on. I'll end myself here ;o] Just know that Your dedication is appreciated, thats all thats important.

Ok... just visited RoadFly for the first time. Damn they need to get their site sorted out.

I gave up looking over the forums... I cannot stand discussion lists like that... one reply per page... would take forever to find the answer that you're looking for.

I wouldn't pay them anything for 'Inner Circle Membership' the site is just too badly designed to be worth anything...

Fantastic point about black listing. In no way do I expect this site to be some sort of E21 country club (like some other sites *cough* bmw320i.com *cough*). I'm just tired of having to go to sooo many different places to try and get information and meet people. I go to roadfly for tech stuff, yahoo for racing (mostly david mcintyre and todd eyster), bimmerforums for people in the southwest. I just wish that everyone would end up at one place. I think that this could be it. A site specifically devoted to E21's. No crappy interfaces to worry about (yahoo, and roadfly). No adds or banners (Bimmerforums and roadfly). Just a bunch of E21ers shooting the shit and getting down to business about the car that we love. It's not so much as putting the "other guys" out of business by Tricord opening up this site. Do you honestly click on the ad banners at roadfly for a hot new E46 intake? No, the E46 guys do. If roadfly gave us any attention besides trying to stop Tricord from posting links to his site they might get a little more love from us.
This is long and drawn out, and in no way a personal attack on anyone. I'm just venting what I see and believe to be true. Take it at face value and do with it what you will.

cheers,
Nic

Another personal incentive for me to start this site is to provide information people are usually looking for, especially 320/6 and 323i related info.

The 320i/4 is relatively well covered, but the six cylinders are not.

Forums are one thing, but I find clear, informative and straightforward articles and illustrations as important as forums.

There isn't a site that has got it all yet, and even if it's ambitious, I'm going for it. I have done it using this site system on other subjects before, and I enjoy doing that as much as working on my car.

The one thing that I like about roadfly is the way the page is set up and that there is only one topic area. Other than that, I won't miss it. I guess the thing that upset me the most is not being able to put up a garage sale notice. I've bought, sold, and given away a lot of e21 stuff over the last several years.

I did try to check out www.bmw320i.com... the wouldn't let me register because I was a roadfly, and yahoo member. I tried twice.. the first one got a reply, the second one didn't.
