A company called ADDCO makes a front sway bar for e21s that is a little unique. It doesn't replace your old bar but gets attached to the frame rails behind the motor. I got a PDF file for the installation if anyone is interested.
I think it has the added benefit of stablizing the control arms as well.
Although it uses some bracketry I'm will probably end up welding brackets to the frame rails.
It also comes with Urethane bushings. Cost was $139

How different is this from the Alpina bar that we just did a group buy on? Mounts "behind" the engine?

Edumacate me please.

Give me your email and I'll send you the PDF.

You know those two brackets on the frame rails where the rails start curving under the car? The ones with the large holes in them? (What are those for anyway?) The bar attaches just in front of those.
The arms of the sway bar attach to the control arms.
I would think that this would pretty much eliminate any shimmy and REALLY locate the front suspension, essentially pinching the control arms between the two sway bars preventing any front or backward movement.

Cool emal me the PDF i drop a IMS with it.

In the UK a company does a kit to double up the roll bars (one above the other) and makes the bottom one adjustable.

The helper bar for the stock sway. I wonder if my front frame will crack if it is used along with the 29mm bar

Ok guys I sent the pdfs out.
Ray I was going to get the 29mm from Sherman but I saw this thing and liked the idea.
I'll be installing it next weekend and we'll see if there are any surprises. For $139 bucks it's worth a shot.

Finally happy with the handling, compliant without sway. I was able to even back off on the rear sway as I am not losing the negative camber in the turns. All the hardware is being replaced with titanium, including the brackets, next weekend.
Here are some pictures:

that is a snug fit. Thought it would have grabbed on to the sway bar and not the control arm. Do you have a 27mm bar in there? Looks bigger than the run of the mill 23.5mm one.

Ray it's a 25.something bar. It's tight but no clearance problems. I had to grind a corner of the top bracket to clear the original sway and one of the brake ducts had to be "altered" (hacked it off I'll rebuild it later).
Side benefit is that it seems to have tightened up the whole front end. No vibrations, clunks, squeaks etc.

I guess this explains while later and larger chassis bimmers got more complex suspension with more links!

Yep. It is way too much fun but I am overdriving the car, sliding and drifting through the course.
I think I can get the guy in the modified Z3 if I "drive fast in the fast parts and slow in the slow parts". That run I tried to keep from sliding and it felt painfully slow but generated the best time.

Could I get a copy of this pdf file so that I can see how this bar attaches to the subframe?

I have a "double stacked" sway bar set up on my 77 wide-body conversion (just like they did on the racing 320i's). It works great for keeping the rear end on the ground during autocrosses.

I would be concerned that in addition to what I already have, stiffer could promote more understeer than desired. But it still might be and advantage.

Thank you,

Where do you get these? There are plenty of places that carry ADDCO sway bars for GM and Chrysler.......none for old BMWs.

Anyone have a part number?

I did a search for addco and there are plenty of vendors for their swaybars (including summit racing). But, I'm not sure if it is the same as what redmist mentioned or just another beefy swaybar (3/4").
