I just picked up a nice e30 323i engine and was wondering where can I find some specs on this engine. I know it came through with 150 h.p. but wanted to find out more info about intake port sizes etc. I have heard this intake along with the 721(vs. the 200 code 2.7 head) code head was an upgrade for the 2.7 that I currently have installed in my 323i. If anyone has some info, let me know.
as always, thanks

From Haynes, here's some E30 323i information.
The engine has a little less power than the E21 323i (102kW as opposed to 105kW) but has more torque at lower rpm (205Nm/151 lbf ft at 4000rpm as opposed to 190Nm/140 lbf ft at 4600rpm).
Other than this, Haynes doesn't make any difference between the two engines. Sorry I can't be of more help...

Hi Tricord
Thanks for the info. I found out a little more. The early 2.3 e30 motor had less hp than the e21 motor due to a lo perf cam but they changed it during the model run and it was rated at 150 hp. I just took the head off the e30 2.3 and cannot believe the size of the ports in the head and manifold compared to the 2.7 and e21 2.3 head I have sitting on the bench. I will post some pics of the different port sizes. I can see that this "721" code head is a big improvement as far as port sizes go, over the standard e21 2.3 or e30 2.7 head. also I noticed the e30 2.3 has a slight pop up to the piston where the e21 2.3 pistons are a flat top. Interesting.

Ok, some more cylinder head info. Comparing port sizes, the 2.7 head has a round 32mm intake port while the e30 323 head has an oval port measuring approximately 44.5 mm in height and 38.1 mm in width. The valve sizes are the same as are the exhaust sizes. The thing that is interesting is that my 323 e21 has exhaust manifolds that have a bottom opening of 38mm while the e30 manifold opening is 50.8 mm. Sorry to keep going on about this head but I see some pretty good performance potential for the 2.7 using this head without having to go to custom pistons as you would with the 2.5 head swap.

Here is the head comparison. Top is the E30 323i head, bottom is the e21 323i/e30 2.7 head. Pretty big diff in intake ports.

It looks like the e30 is just ported. Notice the indentations at the top of the e30 intake? Hmmm, just makes me wonder about e30 M10 heads..... |

No, when you look at the head in person you can see that it has not been ported. Also look at the casting right below the BMW emblem. You will notice that on the 2.7 head the circular pad is seperate from the port flange, while it is connected to the flange on the e30 head because of the bigger flange.

True, it still leaves me wondering about the e30 M10. It is a different casting but it still ahs the same basic design with larger ports etc. Does anyone know the OEM HP for an e30 M10? |
