Anyone else run into this?
The forwardmost bolts that you use to hang the Alpina tie bar on my car are actualy welded studs. I would have to cut them flush and drill them out to use the hardware suppled with the kit.
Is my car unique or am I missing the obvious?

On the front of the sway bar brackets on the 323i the studs had already been replaced with bolts. In order to install the front bar on yours they have to come out. By going up and behind you will find space to guide the new bolts and a wrench in. |

So I got to cut and drill? This may be a lot of effort for little return as I already have the Hartge shock tower brace.

they don't slide out like the ones for the euro bumpers? Held in there as in a wedge, not exactly welded in there. They might just pop straight out with a few whacks of the BFH. |

Hi Bruce, Ray, Everyone.
I have not installed mine yet. I am going to do my control arms at the same time. Car still in the shop, but paint booth is finally being set up.
If someone who has the Alpina bar installed and could take a picture an post in into the tread I think it would help here.
For my bar, I mistakenly got the wrong nuts sent with the bolts. Does anyone know what size metric that the nuts are.
Thanks, the wrong nuts are making me nuts..
and I can not install it without the right ones.
lol,
Joe

They don't budge. I haven't used the BFH as yet.

Joe, the correct nuts were mailed Friday. Bruce, that's definitely unusual. On the 3 cars I've looked at (my '78 320i parts car, my 80 323i and my bro's '83 320i) the bars were all held on with bolts and nuts.

on the top of my old/stock bolts that held the fronts of the swaybar brackets, there used to be these square locking plates that went around the head of the bolt....to prevent it from spinning when you were tightning the nut onto it.
those square plates can bend (edges might flare-up) with enough force or possibly dig into the surrouding metal, making them pretty jammed in there.
never heard those bolts being welded in there...might be the result of a past mechanic working on the car.
i installed my 'alpina bar'...so far, i like it a lot. I'll hopefully be autox'ing my car in about 2 1/2 weeks, so i'll find out then if it made a difference handling wise....but so far, i've noticed that a lot of the little noises from the front of the car have gone away (noises like little creaks/clicks).
heres a couple pics i just took right now:
unless you run into a problem like Bruce, installation is cake (takes maybe 10 minutes if you take your time) |

When I get over this miserable summer cold I am gonna take another look. It made no sense to me to have a welded stud for a sway bar clamp.
FWIW I have gone to a 22mm rear bar and it has made all the difference in the world for autocrossing. I have kept the stock front 22mm.

My bolts were just set in there the heads are welded onto a litlle square plate so you dont need a wrench on the top to put the nut back on. a few wacks with a hammer and they pop out and can be replaced with the longer bolts. For me the problem was getting the bar on sonce my rails had flexed a hair. it took two come alongs on the sway to get it to all line up right, was a royal pain in the butt, but worth it. I hope to never have a need to take it off.... |

Just installed the bar Ken put together for me. It made a huge difference, the car is significantly more "tight" in the front. rear feels really loose now comparably,,,,,,
Side comment, K-Mac Camber/Caster plates from BavAuto with stock 323i springs raised the car in the front hehehehe |
