M20 engine info
The M20 is a watercooled in-line six cylinder engine, with a cast iron block and light alloy head. There are two valves per cylinder, operated by a single central overhead camshaft which is belt-driven. Pistons have three rings, two for compression and one for oil control. The 320/6 and 323i have identical block and head, they are interchangeable. So are the conrods, but the pistons and crankshaft are different.

The engine is cooled by a radiator and a belt-driven fan with a clutch mechanism. On the other side of the axe on which the fan is mounted, inside the block, resides the water pump.
