Removing the windows
In order to remove the windows, I got the help from a fellow E21 enthusiast, Matthieu. He knows the E21 through and through, so removing the windows was an easy task for him. In order to remove the rear side windows, you have to remove the interior panels underneath them. In order to remove those, you have to remove the entire rear seat. Matthieu says my window rubber seals are still good enough to be reused, and that new ones are rather expensive.
However, the body around the windshield is pretty rusted and will need some serious attention. See for yourself on the picture below:
Removing the interior
With the rear seats already removed, it was very easy to unbolt the front Recaro seats from their fixtures.
The carpet is fairly easily to remove after removing the plastic plates under the doors and the center lower console. I had to fiddle around a bit with the pedals to remove the carpet over them, but it wasn't impossible. I should note that whoever installed the radio in this car did a nightmare of a job... the wires were running from the radio in the console to the hatplank under the rear window, and were cut and reconnected in several places. The antenna wire had also a very strange connection. Anyway, I'll have to re-wire the new radio myself.
Body condition
Now that we're getting closer to a bare shell, more rust damage becomes apparent. There is a hole in the floor at the passenger footwell, a hole behind the rear seat through to the rear wheelwell, a hole in the floor of the back of the trunk, and there is considerable damage under the window seals (all windows have some rust around them). The windshield support was so rusted it actually leaked water inside, which ran down behind the console and accumulated under the carpet in the rubber insulation layer. It looks like I will need new rockers as well, and there is a nice rust hole on the bottom corner under the left front wing, just like on my 320/6. The damage on the front from the accident is minimal compared to the rust damage on other places.
However, I feel quite confident that all of this will be sorted out. I will clean and sand the car myself, after which I will give it in the hands of a professional to have everything welded and repaired, then repainted.
