Engine dismantling

Breaking up the engine
In contrast with the engine still in the car, it is now very easy to unbolt the gearbox from the engine block. I stripped a small 10mm bolt in the process though, but I managed to unscrew it with vice grips.
It was child's play to remove the intake and outtake manifolds, the distributor, water pump, warm-up regulator, timing belt and belt tensioner from there. I store all small pieces in labelled plastic bags for easy retrieval later.
Then I removed the valve cover and everything looked pretty good in there. The oil was remarkably clean (in contrast with the 320/6 which was extremely dirty). This indicates that the engine is still in good condition and has been well taken care of.

The cylinder head
I was also happy to see that none of the head bolts had snapped despite the rather high mileage, and I was able to pull the cylinder head without much trouble. It is now sitting in the basement waiting to undergo the same procedure as my 320/6 head. I will write in more detail about that in due time on the engine rebuild pages.

The engine block
With the cylinder head removed, I could take a look for the first time at the condition of the cylinder bores. I think they are still in good condition, because I could still see the factory honing! Anyway, it will be evaluated in detail at the engine workshop later.
The flyweel is undone from the clutch, then the flywheel is unbolted from the crank. On the other side of the crank, I removed the pulleys as well. I unbolted the oil pan, removed the oil pump and proceeded to unbolt the piston rods.
As expected, the rod bearings showed some wear, but nothing too serious. Once all six pistons removed, I started to unbolt the crank.

That's my progress so far folks! I will write more as I continue my work...
