Hi there everybody newbie here.
Went with a friend to collect a engine block for a mk2 escort and scrappy man had an e21 316 parked up. The motor only had 110,000 miles but had been sitting for some time. she seems very clean with only the front and rear valence scabby. (my bro does body repair so shouldn't be any problem ) anyway what i was wondering is should i buy it? my plan of action so to speak would be to put maybe a m42/m44 in the car lower her on 15inch bbs and sort the handling and the brakes for a bit of retro cool what do you all think? is there a huge amount of work or am i dreaming? thx anyway,
Gaz

Yes, and no. The M42 was not meant for it, so there is electrical engine management to contend with. How good are you with that?

The trend in this forum is to upgrade to an M20...but that means swapping out the front subframe for one that can handle the six cylinder. You are already going to change the suspension, so that is the same.

You can get power out of an M10. There are plenty of people on this board that have done that, but it often means rebuilding the engine and putting a turbo on there.

cheers for that response mayan, my working background is in electronics, ( i work in telecoms , however i have never undertaken this kind of thing before! The reason i was thinking m42/m44 was to do with weight/handling issues, and the fact that over here there is a lot of bmws with this kind of engine, ie if it breaks stick another in. If the m20 is an easier route and it doesnt affect handling, then certainly i would go for that engine.

I say, go for it. 150 is a low price.

You can get very decent power from the M10, M20 is a nice engine incredible sound and pulls strong but about handling....yes you will notice a more nose heavy car but nothing out of the ordinary, this cars came stock with M20's.

M42 can be done, one of the guys in the forum did it.

Yes, it has been done too.........but you have to exchange the entire drive train.

These cars have also had the big six engines from larger BMW's put in there.

The body is a great body if you want to tinker. I would also venture to say that it is a lot easier than what it looks. The best thing is to pull it completely apart, and start over from scratch. I regreted wasting money in doing it half ass the first time around. I ended up pulling the car apart anyway for a full restore and engine rebuild. It takes a whole lot longer, but everything is easier to work on when it is completely outside of the car.

How about leaving it completely original? That's much cooler and retro
