About a month ago a bought an 81 323i to replace my 77 320i project. I had striped the 320i and was accumulating parts for a ground up restoration including an M20 stroker conversion, all new suspension, a 5-speed, the works. Well my wife and I had our first child about a month ago and I knew I was not going to be able to devote the time or money to this project that it would require so when I spotted this 323 on craigslist I snatched it up.
It is pretty much already what I was intending to build my 320 in to. I now know what you guys have been talking about all this time. What an awesome car, and what a difference in performance from my bone stock 320 w/ an auto to my 323 with the M20, a 5-speed, lowered with a set of Bilsteins and 14x6.5 wheels!
The car runs pretty good but I think it needs a tune up. I have made a list of items I am going to replace but I have a quick spark plug question. Should I buy resistor plugs or non-resistor plugs? I am going to buy a set of high performance wires from BMP Design if that means anything.

I hope to be around here more often now!

-Dave

imho, "performance wires" are a waste of money if they are significantly more expensive (id expect a good lead set to be around $100).

The original beru items are very low resistance and extremely high quality so you arent really going to get a better lead, no matter what you spend. Just stay away from some of the cheaper bosch and ac delco sets. Just to give you an example, ive got a set of beru leads on my jps which have done over 150,000km, 15 years old and still have the same very low resistance as normal.

Bosch plugs are average, dont bother with all these long life plugs and multi electrodes, they just dont run well with them, just stay with a copper plug and they run great.

Personally, i dont think you can really get a better plug than an NGK,i just generally run a BP5ES and never have any problems.

I ordered my parts today and asked the rep at bavauto which plug BMW recomended and he said they used to recomend W8DC but now recomend the WR8DC.

Here are the wires I ordered, also BMP offers the W8DC on their site instead of the WR8DC.

I have'nt bought any plugs yet, but I may try those NGKs Hatter.

C'mon chupchup, there's always room for an E30 in the stable!

nice find!

yeah- I'm with hatter on the NGKs... haven't been real keen on the W8DC or WR8DCs - the NGK BP5ES plugs are cheap and last well!

Hey Dave,
Congrats, that's a real nice looking car. Where did you find it? Where in Washington are you?

I live in Centralia, in case you don't know where that is it's halfway between Portland and Seattle off I-5. I bought the car from a BMW enthusiast in Battle Ground Wa. Are you in Portland?
